Youth EXPLORE Trades Sampler

The objective of the Youth EXPLORE Trades Sampler offered at VIU is to provide hands-on experience in a variety of in-demand careers. Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools, the CTC, works in partnership with VIU to deliver a full semester exploration program. After completion of this program, a student can decide to apply to a Foundation program through our Youth Train in Trades, or an apprenticeship through our Youth Work In Trades Program. We will be running three sections in 2022/23 and each section will have a focus on elements unique to the students in that group.

  • Introduction to Welding
  • Worksite Saftey
  • Job Site Visits

  • Introduction to Carpentry

  • Standard First Aid
  • Confined Space Entry
  • What’s WHMIS
  • Construction and Forestry Machine Simulation Training
  • Work Experience

Dates:

Mixed Cohort: September 6th to January 27st

Female Only: January 30th to June 23rd, 2023

Pilot – Indigenous Focused: January 30th to June 23rd, 2023 This sampler is still in development and could be offered at VIU or Woodlands Secondary. Some trade offerings could change but the main objectives and mini credentials would be the same. This Sampler would have an Indigeonus focus throughout all teachings.

Classes will run between 8:00 AM and 3:30 PM Monday to Friday. (start and end times each day could vary)

Credits:

Students will receive 12 PSI (Post Secondary Institution) credits as well as their CLC course, all leading to toward their grade 12 graduation requirements for a total of 16 credits.

Cost:
There is no cost to the program but students will be required to purchase some PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) such as Work Safe approved footwear. PPE is available at no cost for students in need.

Program Overview

Students are responsible for the VIU application fee, student fees, student activity fees, materials, travel, parking, and textbooks costs. If you drop out of all VIU courses you register for, you could be responsible for the $200.00 VIU registration fee.

If you wish to take a course that is not approved by the CTC you can pay for the course directly to VIU and possibly still receive dual credit. Talk to the CTC staff about this option.
