The objective of the Youth EXPLORE offered at VIU is to provide hands-on experience in a variety of in-demand careers. VIU will work in partnership with Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools who will, at the end of the 12 week training program, work with their students to help them find Work Experience or Secondary School Apprenticeships opportunities. If a student decides to apply to a Foundation program such as Youth TRAIN, they will be register as an apprentice with NLPS and start working towards their ITA certification in a Red Seal Trade.

- Introduction to Welding
- Introduction to Carpentry
- Introduction to Electrical Theory and Safety
- Introduction to General Mechanics
- Fall Protection
- Standard First Aid
- Confined Space Entry
- What’s WHMIS
- Construction and Forestry Machine Simulation Training
The program will take place at VIU and will start February and run until the end of April. Monday to Thursday. Friday is not a day off. Students will be expected to be working on their educational plan or working in an apprenticeship. Classes will start at 8:00 AM and dismiss at 2:45 PM.
Students will receive 12 PSI (Post Secondary Institution) credits that will go toward their grade 12 elective requirements. If students enroll in WEX or Youth WORK they will receive additional credits.
There is no cost to the program but students will be required to purchase some personal safety clothing such as Work Safe approved footwear.
